The 227 in the left-hand column are paying members with three exceptions to whom the NEWS is given free of charge because of service of great value to the NEY/S* The dues of four others are at present outstanding*

Balance on hand

As will be seen from a perusal of the accounting an extremely frugal management of the NEWS has left a small working balance with which to commence 1848* The only way this balance has been achieved, even with strict economies, has been the generosity in giving funds beyond the required dues* Without these gifts a deficit would have been our unhappy result at the present time.

Mimeographing the NEWS has been unsatisfactory from several points of view. First, it required a very great amount of my time, as well as that of Mr. Clench and far more so of Mrs. Remington, merely to do the mechanics of mimeographing. Second, the process produced copies of very poor appearance, at times illegible. Prom now on, time for mimeographing will not be available, and the NEWS deserves a more respectable appearance. Consequently the possibilities of various printing processes have been thoroughly explored and arrangements have been completed to have the NEWS lithoprinted in 1948, and presumably from then on. There will be nine monthly numbers (July, August, September omitted) of twelve pages each. Lithoprinting is advantageous for many reasons. First, it is inexpensive. Second, it permits unlimited illustrations, including half-tones, at no extra cost. Third, it gives much prompter service than regular printing. Fourth, the usual reduction will give perhaps half as many words more than mimeographing for the same page size. Thus the NEWS will have 108 pages but will contain the equivalent of 162 of the 1947 NEWS* In order to finance the improvement in the NEWS I estimate that it will be necessary to have approximately 350 members at the minimum dues of $1#50 or 250 of these Regular Members and 50 Sustaining Members at $3*00, or any other combination totalling about $525*00# It appears that with continued cooperation from you in extending the mem-bership to include all potential members, at least in North America, the total of 300 members will be reached by the end of 1948. Thus it only remains for as many of you as feel the Society worthy of support and willing to provide this, to give generously as you did in 1947* 1948 should put us over the hump so that in all succeeding years the size of the membership will assure full support of the NEWS without special contributions*

One other urgent need for your financial attention exists. The activities and aims of the Society can best be served if there are numerous foreign members, sharing the viewpoints and valuable work of countries outside North America with the large number of members from North America. As you know, the international currency situation is very bad and discriminates heavily against citizens of virtually every country outside the U.S.A. Therefore it is hoped that a number of American Lep. Soc. members will volunteer to pay for the subscription to the NEWS for one or more foreign Lepidopterists. Ten foreign members were so benefited in 1947 and it is hoped that this number will be quadrupled, at least, in 1948. Send an additional &1.50 for each foreign member you wish to receive the NEWS with your compliments. It may be one of your own acquaintance or we shall be pleased to give you one or more names from our waiting list.

In closing, I should like to point out with thanks the large share of the work of the NEWS so kindly handled by Mrs. Jeanne E. Remington, particularly with the last five issues, in which she more than filled Mr. Clench!s place after his move to Michigan necessitated his resignation from the co-editorship.

Sincerely yours, /
